The Last Hurrah.
Well if there is one thing my friends at the North Star Invitational Racing
Pigeon Club know, in a word -- SPORTSMAN. More politically correct,
SPORTSPEOPLE ? Every year about this time, this group of individuals gathers
for their annual banquet and awards ceremony.
Saturday night (Nov. 13, 1999) was an exceptional evening of
sportsmanship, firsts galore (more later) and was a truly gala event, this year
held at Delhi's Hungarian House. The MC for the evening, Mr. Roland Paret, a
true diplomate and gentleman of the sport, spent the best part of the social
hour making sure everyone attending was welcomed.
After eating "weigh" too much, it was time to get down to the business of
pigeon racing - passing out the accolades. There clearly was no shortage of
beautiful clocks, trophies, plaques and figurines filling several tables in
front of the stage. Mr. Nick Oud, was called upon to recognize the generous
donations of all the sponsors involved. Luckily, Roland had a list of those
sponsors available for him!

The club wishes to extend sincere thanks to all those that help make the awards
something the members treasure every year.
Several members were then recognized for the performance and achievements of
their pigeons. In this highly competitive club there would be no shortage of
awards to hand out.

With the business portion of the evening out of the way, entertainment was
provided by the "Blue Waves". The accordion player, in a more humorous moment
of dialog with the audience, "reflected" on one individual in the crowd with a
receding hair line, stating "that it was the sign of a thinking person". This
accordion player then noted that the same person also had a "chrome dome" and
that this was known "to be the sign of a good lover". It was soon concluded
that this individual must have "thought he was a good lover". Likely as a
result of both attributes being true! It was not until later in the evening
that the true nature of this individual was revealed when he was seen dancing
arm in arm with a chair. This again drew the attention of the band, and almost
everyone else in attendance, well I guess you had to be there..
Throughout the evening, there were numerous draws for door prizes. In fact over
50 such prizes were available. Additional activities included a 50/50 draw, and
some form of card game with the winner at each table receiving the table's
center piece. It was noted that during the door prizes some of "the men" would
quickly hand winning tickets to their wives depending on what the prize was.
What is that all about ? Roland had a difficult time keeping a straight face
during some of these drawings, and for that, well I guess you had to be there..
Special Birthday wishes went out to Joe and Roger. But folks don't give up your
day jobs or come out of retirement for a singing career.
All in all, I believe everyone had a great time, and all appear to be looking
forward to a great season next year. The first of the new millenium by the
way.. So Good Luck and thank you everyone.
